Short, thick dark-green grass; a path curving left and right from one horizon to its opposite; a blank sky, “no stars, just black,” with no sun or moon. A single long, thick, dry-brown dead tree stands there, the Fool's first tree, “given by God.” Samson enters from the south of route zero and takes the only exit, to the north, after chopping the tree down.

Alice Love's painting shows the jester on an old tree, “an endless field of green with a path cutting through it, like the slithering movement of a large snake gone North,” beneath “that most pure black.”
